The answer to this Question kind of depends on what kind of diving flips your switch. But if it's reefs and fish your interested in the Florida Keys is the place to go. You don't have to go to key west either, Islamorada has some excellent diving

While the Keys provide some great diving, there are also many great places to go along the east coast of the state. Jupiter Florida is one of the best kept secrets. Because the Gulf Stream comes to its closest point to the mainland, the water is incredibly warm. Most of the diving is drift diving which is easy, but disconcerting to some because it is impossible to swim against the current. Boynton Beach has some incredible reefs as well.

I am a PADI dive instructor and lived in FL from 1997 to 2010. I lived in The Fl keys which offers great shallow dives along with several wrecks that are fantastic. However the gulf stream is always very close to ft Lauderdale so vis is mostly always excellent, weather of course plays a factor. There are wrecks off this coast that even the dive operators do not disclose to divers. Just off-shore you can visit several deep wrecks, drift dive in 50-70 ft of water and tons of see life big and small. There are even places that are great to dive from shore. This is why I love to dive off the coast of Ft Lauderdale and feel it is the best Fl has to offer.

I agree with the other responders. The Florida Keys has some great diving with loads of fish and usually calm seas. Also great wreck diving. We usually go to Islamorada and dive with Key Dives. They take care of all your gear from the moment you walk into the shop, switch tanks in between, and rinse and hang out. We senior divers love that kind of service. If you don't want to travel all the way, the West Palm Beach/Jupiter area is excellent. Lots of big fish, giant turtles, moray eels, and angel fish, and if your lucky, sharks. Boynton also is excellent. All this due to the proximity of the Gulf Stream.

The Keys is where I have done a majority of my diving and you there is a ton of diversity, warm waters, great vis, and plenty of wrecks if you want to go beyond the shallow reefs. However, not mentioned is Venice Beach on the Gulf coast. It doesn't have the life of any of the other sites but is world famous for the fossilized shark teeth found on almost every dive. I made a one hour long dive last summer and surfaced with over 40 teeth. That was shore diving and if you take a charter out you can get some better locations and the rare Megalodon teeth are found farther out a bit more frequently as well.
