AKR's Dolphin/Scuba Camp for Kids

By the end of camp, children develop a genuine appreciation for ocean marine life & our environment Dolphin/Scuba Camp provides the perfect opportunity for parents to dive while knowing their kids are happily occupied. During the six-day program, kids interact with dolphins through various encounters, feeding and training sessions. Highly qualified staff members from Roatan Institute of Marine Sciences and the Scuba School at AKR also teach children about dolphin behavior and anatomy, take them snorkeling and on field trips, horseback riding and other organized activities.Children are divided into three age groups according to PADI guidelines for SASY (ages 5-9), Bubblemakers (ages 8-10) and Junior Certification (ages 10-14) instruction. Children join parents for lunch, and parents are always welcome to observe and participate in most activities. By the end of camp, children develop a genuine appreciation for ocean marine life and our environment.Island Fiesta Night (Monday) is a great way to break the ice. Kids and adultsenjoy food & drinks, crab races, relay races, volleyball, limbo contests, local entertainment, dancing, and kayaking around the key.Beautiful Tabayana Beach comes alive during Wednesday's picnic. Divers meet up with non-divers, and all seem to enjoy the tranquil water and excellent snorkeling, volleyball, horseback riding in the surf, etc. Children are also kept busy with their Scuba/SASY/Bubblemakers instruction, with ample time and opportunity for family interaction.A horseback ride to the nearby Bird Park is a must! Just a short trip through the small village of Sandy Bay on horseback gives families a great feel for the surrounding village life and unfolds a unique attraction, the Bird Park. Tropical birds (parrots, mccalls, tucan, many more) find sanctuary here from black market poachers. Children are able to hold some of the birds and allow them to perch on their shoulders for photos. A field trip to a local iguana farm is worth the twenty minute bus ride. The local iguana farmer raises approx. 400 iguanas, and the kids are brought in around feeding time to witness their choreographed chow-down. AKR has also introduced early dinners for the kids, so parents can enjoy a romantic sunset dinner alone. After dinner, kids are treated to a movie with popcorn.One highlight is the family dolphin encounter at the end of the week. Families may join their children for a beach encounter which affords great photo opportunities. Children are allowed to ride the dorsal fin, but their parents have to settle for petting and kissing the dolphins. This is followed by a dolphin snorkel/swim (kids only, but it is the last of several swims with the dolphins that they experience). This is a fitting farewell to new found friends.AKR recently converted four standard rooms on the key into ''Deluxe Suites'' which are ideally suited for families. These air conditioned, 20' x 20', Deluxe Suites are a roomier alternative, equipped with a king-sized bed, and a double bed. Each suite features its own covered porch, and adjoining sun deck that is either private or shared with a matching suite. In addition, the new suites feature high visibility glass windows, mini refrigerator, ceiling fan, and enhanced closet and storage facilities.
