From the Valenza trip journal:
Day 4
Today we woke up at 7:30 in St. Barths to a great breakfast of
tasty French toast and iced tea made by our excellent chefs Maggie
and Sarah. Then we all took a trip to the beach, where we discussed
our full-value contracts (the commitments we will make to our
leaders and each other), as well making a web of trust for our
group. Afterwards, we swam back to the boat to get ready for our
navigation dive, and review our use of compasses with Tiffany.
Next we dove, got great practice with navigation and came up to the
boat for some chill time, during which big Joe, Logan, Brooks, and
Jordan all climbed the jib. In the meantime, Peter, Ben, Natalie,
and Trevor all learned how to use the compressor, and Ellie chilled
out in the hammock along with Miriam.
We all ate a great lunch of chicken salad and went for a great dive
where Emma spotted a moray eel and Miriam and Scott spotted a sea
urchin. When we got back we all chilled, Brooks and Jordan flew a
kite from the dinghy and Peter chased turtles, accidentally scaring
them away in the process. After the slow speed chase we were all
briefed about our night dive and ate a great chili dinner.
Finally it was the moment we all were waiting for... the night
dive. We all set out slightly nervous and not sure what to expect.
When we reached our site we were given instructions on how to
signal in the dark, get others’ attention, and where to point
our lights, as well as how to go to different sites based on being
in the red or green groups. We all were freaked out about sinking
into the darkness below, but when we finally got down we all truly
enjoyed ourselves. In the red group Logan spotted a school of squid
and little Joe spotted a giant sea turtle. In the green group there
is still controversy over the spotter of another turtle between
Sarah and Trevor, as well as the finding of a spotted moray
eel.
In the end, today was a great day filled with glows and hardly any
Glums. We truly hope to have more days like this, and we look
forward to going to Gustavia!
