Manatee Matters

Average Rating

Any manatee living in the extended southeastern region of the United States is properly known as a Florida manatee. It is one of two sub-species of West Indian manatee.

The issue of interaction with aquatic life, such as manatees, is becoming increasingly popular and controversial. Recently, the diving community has responded with the formation of the Global Interactive Marine Experience Council (GIMEC). The purpose of GIMEC is to assist in marine life conservation efforts and to provide an ongoing process for the development and distribution of recommended guidelines for marine life interactive experiences throughout the world. The GIMEC Advisory Board includes a wide range of experts from both the diving and scientific communities, including representatives from Project AWARE Foundation.
