Palm Beach - On the evening of April 1, ER Bradley's Saloon in West Palm Beach will host an eco-awareness and fundraising event on behalf of the Philippe Cousteau Foundation. The event, which will be held from 7 p.m. until midnight, will create awareness of the problems that deteriorating water quality may present to local beaches, reefs and fisheries, and will encourage participation in an ongoing series of Foundation and volunteer-run projects designed to curb or reverse these effects. Proceeds of the fund raising program will benefit the foundation's recently established water-and-reef monitoring and restoration programs. Phillipe Alexandra Philippe PierrePresent at the event will be Jan Cousteau, the widow of legendary filmmaker and explorer Philippe Cousteau, her son Philippe Pierre and daughter Alexandra (grandson and granddaughter of Jacques Cousteau), Sport Diver Magazine editor Pierce Hoover, and Foundation team members and research scientists from Harbor Branch Oceanographic Institute. The band Savana will perform for the benefit, and fund raising efforts will include the sale of autographed Cousteau memorabilia and dive equipment. The Philippe Cousteau foundation was created in March 2000 to re-establish the Cousteau family commitment to ecological action and education through documentary filmmaking. In June 2000, the foundation formed a partnership with Harbor Branch, which now serves as headquarters for foundation activities. In addition to educational and public awareness programs, the foundation is actively pursuing realistic, cost effective solutions to current and projected water resource problems. Most recently, the foundation has launched a worldwide program to assess the condition of inshore and offshore waters, underwater habitats and fish populations. Data from this ongoing study will be used to influence state, national and international policy, and represents the first phase in a multi-year initiative to seek and implement solutions to these issues.Other solution based programs currently under development by Harbor Branch and the Foundation include the commercial production of tropical aquarium fish as an alternative to the highly destructive practice of wild capture, and the promotion of no-impact aquaculture programs designed to replace shrimp trawling -- considered one of the world's most destructive and wasteful methods of fishing.
