Follow the White Light

Underwater Kinetics' eLED Dive Pak

I once took a trip to Bonaire and spent the entire week night diving. My buddy Sean Ansorge and I have always been night-diving wackos, so the concept certainly made perfect sense to us. We explored dusk to dawn and rarely saw the light of day. Everywhere I visit, if there's a night dive offered, I'm usually chomping at the bit until sunset. I'm also the kind of diver who likes to poke my head into dark, shadowy places along the reef during my daylight jaunts, so I'm fairly picky about the quality of dive light that I pack in my dive bag, and the kind of light it puts out.

My most recent acquisition, Underwater Kinetics' eLED Dive Pak, has solved several diving dilemmas for me. First, the primary light in the Pak, the compact Sunlight C4 eLED, packs small, which is great in today's travel world. With a white LED lamp and a 6-watt bulb, it possesses more than enough light for my nocturnal skulking, but not so much so that it overwhelms the night-diving experience. I also particularly like the blue-white quality of the light itself. The light emitted from the white LED most closely resembles sunlight, so the colors the light reveals look much more vibrant and true to aquatic life. The beam itself is fairly tight, without a great amount of fall-off, and has two settings, 6-watt and 3-watt.

The Dive Pak solves my other needs, too. As a photographer, I don't always have an extra hand to carry the bigger light, so I usually mount a smaller light to my housing for spotting and focusing. The Pak includes a Mini Q40 with a single 4-watt bulb, which provides plenty of light for dark-water prowling. It's easily mounted to the housing via an ultra-light bracket for hands-free use.

The third light in the pack, the Mini Pocket Light, helps me find stuff in the dark recesses of my dive bag. It comes with a keychain ring, and I'm sure you'll find all kinds of low-light needs for it.
