Most North American divers remember Cressi-sub as the company that makes the big Rondine Gara fins worn by free-diving legends like Jacques Mayol and Umberto Pelizzari. But in reality, Cressi-sub is a full-line gear manufacturer and a major player in the European and world dive markets. On a recent dive trip to Cuba, I had the chance to demo the company's new XS1 regulator in both sport-diving and technical-diving conditions. The first stage is a straightforward balanced piston design that incorporates two high-pressure ports and four angled low-pressure ports set on a swiveling base. Personal experience proved this regulator's ability to deliver an ample gas supply at any practical diving depth and workload. A check of the engineering stats confirmed my impressions: The XS1 meets and exceeds rigid European UNI EN250 standards. The second stage is set in a streamlined thermoplastic polymer case that incorporates a molded exhaust tee and a large, easily accessed purge button. Other than a top-mounted dive/pre-dive lever, there's no means - or need - to fiddle with the internal air-delivery mechanism. The key to the second stage's performance seems to lie not in exotic technologies, but in engineering refinements that reduce friction on the travel lever, channel air flow efficiently to the Venturi assist and reduce exhalation effort. If you are in the market for a reasonably priced, highly reliable and easy-breathing reg that will meet or exceed all sport-diving needs, have a look at the XS1. The XS1 is a well-engineered yet uncomplicated regulator that deserves its high-performance label. Suggested retail is $294.
