Dive Rite NiTek3

Dive Rite NiTek3 Dive Computer Despite appearances, technical diving is actually about keeping things as simple as possible. The dive plan may require multiple tanks and a host of gear, but veteran techies have learned to carry only those items they truly need for safety and comfort and to select each item based on reliability and simplicity of operation. Keep this concept of functional simplicity firmly in mind as we take a look at Dive Rite's NiTek3, the world's first three-mix dive computer. Yes, there are a lot of functions, features and readouts; after all, we're talking about a machine that will guide you through a staged decompression dive involving three different oxygen/nitrogen breathing gasses, track both nitrogen and oxygen loading and off-gassing, and download every detail of the dive to a PC. Yet even though it is loaded with sophisticated abilities, the NiTek3 is surprisingly easy to operate and interpret in actual use. All user-controlled functions can be accessed and adjusted with two buttons, and the large display screen uses straightforward bar graphs and well-defined numeric displays for vital information such as time, depth, deco status and oxygen exposures. The physical package is reasonably sized, features user-changeable batteries and incorporates a waterproof bulkhead between the electronics and battery chamber. The function buttons are large and easy to understand and access, even when the diver has restricted arm movement due to gear or environmental constraints, an expected feature when you remember that the president of Dive Rite spends his free time worming through underwater cave passages the size of a drainage culvert. This same by tech divers, for tech divers thinking carries over into the programming sequence. When stored, the NiTek3 reverts to a safest possible algorithm (21 percent nitrogen, 50 percent oxygen). When ready for use, the programming sequence is simple enough to perform on a heaving boat deck, and underwater gas switches are user-controlled and feature a three-keystroke command sequence that makes accidental changes almost impossible, even under the extreme conditions of a normal technical dive. Unlike some high-end computers, the NiTek3 will accommodate a broad range of diving uses without undue complexity. On recreational no-stop dives, the user can simply jump overboard and enjoy, with no special programming needed. At the other end of the spectrum, mixed-gas divers can set the oxygen limit to zero to disable the computer's decompression algorithms and allow it to function as a real-time electronic log and a time-and-depth console to 200 meters. If your diving aspirations stretch no further than air or nitrox, there are a number of good computers on the market. But if you are into the complex stuff or plan to advance your diving abilities in the future, the NiTek3 is a good investment. It can accommodate dive plans from mild to wild, is loaded with valuable and essential features and functions and brings straightforward performance and ease of operation to a complex diving environment. SUGGESTED RETAIL: $995FEATURES: Three-mix nitrogen/oxygen programmable, user-changeable batteries, two-button programming, user-controlled gas switches, user-programmable display units (feet/meters, etc.), numeric and graphic displays of nitrogen and oxygen obligations.MORE INFORMATION: Dive Rite, 117 W.
