Ikelite's Auto 35 is a simple, economical point-and-shoot system for casual diving photographers. As long as they work within its limitations, they'll bring back underwater snapshots to share with friends and family. What are those limitations Shoot within two to three feet of the subject. Also, use print film because it is far more tolerant of exposure variations. Ikelite's Substrobe A35 doesn't require a hard-wire connection. An opaque white card reflects the internal flash to a slave sensor that triggers the external strobe. It worked every time during my test. Two framing devices are supplied with the Auto 35. The larger one offers three sighting points corresponding to the distance of the subject. There's an external macro lens with a wire framer for close-ups within 8.5 inches. The camera is focus-free with a fixed aperture. This basic system meets the demands of novice shooters without intimidating them with unneeded technology. ERIC HANAUER
