TEST DIVE - Mares H.U.B.An innovative, all-in-one systemThe Mares HUB – short for Human Underwater Breathing system – an innovative all-in-one approach to scuba diving. Not only does it consolidate BC, weights, firs- and second-stage regulators and the instrument console into a single unit, it also contains a pair of patented features new to the industry. The HUB features Mares’ MRS weight system, which has positive mechanical locks but is easy to deploy. It also includes the company’s patented inflation/deflation control, which replaces conventional pull dumps and exhaust hoses with a pneumatic valve. With this system, divers can add or release air with the touch of a button, and the unit’s fixed mounting position eliminates the usual fumbling for the hose. The Avant Garde model I tested was also equipped with Airlock – a proprietary tank band tensioning system which uses compressed air from the tank to hold it firmly in place. Second-stage hoses and the instrument console are routed through the interior of the HUB jacket, and the low profile first stage is positioned just above a contoured back plate that incorporates a folding handle for transporting the unit. The alternate-air second stage tucks into a quick-release pocket with a transparent window, where it is protected from the marine environment. It can, however, be deployed quickly with a single pull. If you’ve ever struggled to attach your regulator or BC, or worried that you’d left some vital component in your dive locker, you’ll appreciate the HUB. Remove it from the backpack-style carrying case, slip it over a tank and you are ready to dive. No dangling hoses, no extra parts. Just add wetsuit, mask and fins and you are ready to dive. – Pierce Hoover SUMMARYThis all-in-one scuba system eliminates dangling consoles, exposed hoses and separate weight belts. Innovative features include an automatic air dump and tank band tensioning system. Suggested retail is $1,999. See your local Mares dealer or contact:
