Mares M1 Computer

A leading-edge dive computer design For nearly two decades, I've preferred Mares fins. From the Plana Avanti to the Quattro to the Volo, they've always been leading-edge, high-performance products. Ditto for the company's regulators.                My brand loyalty never extended to dive computers, however. Although Mares offered a number of solid, reliable products, I never considered the company to be on the forefront of underwater instrumentation. The company's new M1 dive computer has changed my opinion. This latest-generation product packs cutting-edge software and ample memory into a compact, rugged case. It is a computer that is simple enough for a new diver to start with, yet it is sophisticated enough for advanced divers to stay with. For simplicity of operation, two large, high-visibility buttons provide access to all functions and features. The M1 also offers bi-directional scrolling, which means you can back up and fix mistakes rather than having to scroll forward through the entire menu, as is the case with the majority of programmable dive computers. To enhance underwater safety, the unit also offers a safety-stop display, a series of audible alarms and user-selectable functions. More advanced divers will appreciate the computer's 11-tissue adaptive algorithm, variable ascent rates, altitude compensation feature, metric or imperial display modes and programmable Nitrox settings. With an operationaldepth rating to 490 feet, full-staged decompression capability and agauge-only operation mode, the M1 is a computer that even a tech diver could love. Equally impressive is the memory, which stores and displays up to 50 dive profiles. It also provides complete dive simulation information and downloads to a PC by way of an optical interface. Electronics are housed in an impact-resistant case, with a scratch-resistant mineral glass display and a separate waterproof chamber for theuser-replaceable battery. Summary: With the M1, Mares moves to the forefront of dive computer technology.Capable of supporting advanced diving scenarios, the computer is also easy to operate and is as much at home on shallow reefs as on deep shipwrecks.Suggested retail is $409.
