The invention of weight integration systems represented a majoradvance in BC design. But even through they offered majoradvantages over the traditional weight belt, many of these systemsstill have a few drawbacks.
Depending on where you dive, sand and silt can play hell withthe Velcro fasteners most weight systems employ. And if you add apretty good load of lead, some pockets lose their shape or becomedifficult to secure and adjust.
Recently, I had a chance to dive a weight integration systemthat overcame these drawbacks. The BC was the Pro QD Plus fromSeaQuest. It was fitted with the company's new Sure Lock weightsystem.
Instead of Velcro, the Sure Lock uses a mechanical fastener tosecure the weight pouches. The removable weight packs are fittedwith a stiffening panel, while the BC pouches that receive them areconstructed in a pre-opened shape that allows the packs to slideeasily into place.
One try and I was a believer. The system really works!
Instead of fumbling, twisting and forcing a soft weight packinto a collapsed pouch, with one hand - and without looking - I wasable to guide the Sure Lock packs right into place, and wasrewarded by a reassuring audible click that let me know the pouchwas secured.
Weight removal was equally easy, requiring just one hand torelease and ditch the pack.
The Pro was also equipped with the new Aqua Lung/SeaQuest SOS system
