Aqua Cat Cruises recently purchased 10 HOBO Water Temp Pro underwater data loggers. The underwater loggers have been installed on various dive sites in the Exumas.~ These neat gadgets are instrumental for monitoring the coral growth and overall health of the reef by measuring the water temperatures every 15 minutes for 5 years.~ Precision sensors and twelve-bit resolution provide 0.2C accuracy over the full measurement range of 0 to 50°C in water and -20° to 70°C in air. Yearly data retrieval will be shared with conservancy factors with the same interests.~ Bruce Purdy, RECON trained instructor and president of Aqua Cat Cruises, just returned from an installation trip to the Exumas.~ These monitoring devices were installed at popular sites in the Exuma Cays.~ The Bahamas Ministries of Out Island Tourism and Marine Conservation are both extremely interested in the results garnered from this project.~ Coral bleaching and algae growth in the area prompted the program. Currents that flow through the Exuma Sound bring varied water temperatures through the reef system. These temperature readings will be instrumental in determining the cause of the changes in the reef and whether or not further efforts will be initiated to preserve this precious system. Current water temperatures will be compared from each site within the park.~ RECON training is offered aboard the Aqua Cat by lead dive instructor, Kat Edwards.~RECON training involves underwater measuring skills and recognition of coral conditions. Passengers aboard the Aqua Cat can learn basic skills for monitoring coral status at dive sites. Kayaking the mangroves and shorelines, along with diving and snorkeling the remote reefs offer eco-adventurers the opportunity to experience and explore this exotic location just southeast of Nassau, in the central Bahamas.
