The ocean's apex predator can make for an intimidating mascot, as evidenced by the list below. At least, we think sharks are more fearsome than beavers, for example. But that's just us.
San Jose Sharks
Hockey: This Western Conference ice hockey team might not have a Stanley Cup, but the team’s home rink is called the Shark Tank. At the beginning of each home game, the lights go down, and a 17-foot open shark mouth is lowered from the rafters. The goalie leads the team out of the locker room, through the mouth, and onto the ice.
Arena Football: The American Conference Arena Football League team has a mascot called Chum.
University of South Carolina Beaufort Sand Sharks
Baseball and Golf: The university’s nickname was inspired by the sand sharks that are found in coastal waters off South Carolina’s Lowcountry.
Wilmington (South Carolina) Sharks
Baseball: This baseball team in the summer collegiate Coastal Plain League has a mascot named Sharky. The team plays the Morehead City Marlins and Columbia Blowfish. Seriously.
Swim Club: A highly respected swim club that practices at the Bolles School in Jacksonville, Florida, the school has had at least one alumnus or student competing in every summer Olympics since 1972.
