The World Heritage Committee named the nearly 250,000-acre Rock Islands Southern Lagoon in Palau to the United Nations Educational, Scientific & Cultural Organization’s list of iconic places on Earth. The islands were recognized for their exceptional ecological diversity, coral reefs, islands and marine lakes. (Something we divers already knew, of course!)
“The Rock Islands Southern Lagoon is an outstanding example of how marine ecosystems and communities develop,” says Tim Badman, director of IUCN’s World Heritage Program. “IUCN hopes that the World Heritage status will help further protect this important area for securing people’s livelihoods and adapting to the effects of climate change.”
