PADI Specialty Diver Courses

In this month's Diver's Ed column, Senior Editor Eric Michael writes about what it takes to become an underwater archaeologist and treasure hunter. For those who want to pursue an adventurous career or simply increase skill sets, consider taking a PADI Specialty Diver Course.

Dry Suit Diver
Prerequisites

  • Must be a PADI Open Water Diver
  • Must be 10 years of age or older

Skills you will learn include

  • Don and remove a dry suit
  • Demonstrate how to conduct a buoyancy check at the surface while wearing a dry suit and the proper undergarments
  • Disconnect and reconnect the low-pressure hose from the dry suit inflator while underwater
  • Demonstrate one technique for recovering from excess gas in the feet

Search and Recovery Diver
Prerequisites

  • Must be certified as a PADI Advanced Open Water Diver
  • Must be 12 years of age or older

Skills you will learn include

  • Search for an object in a 1,000 square foot area using expanding square pattern
  • Return recovered object to shore or boat
  • Search for an object in a 1,000 square foot area using the jackstay pattern
  • Recover object weighing 50-100 pounds using lift bag
