Protect 8 Sharks Today

PADI Diving Society Members: Special offer! You can help give sharks a fighting chance!

Support shark conservation with a gift of US $25 or more and receive a free shark mask strap for your next diving adventure. Many of the world's shark species are disappearing – and fast. Your support couldn't come at a better time than now. Eight shark species have their heads on the line and we have a real chance to protect them if we take action today.

Together we're:

Taking nearly 45,000 shark support signatures to meetings with CITES party delegates in key countries. We want their vote to protect 8 critical shark species (great hammerhead, smooth hammerhead, scalloped hammerhead, spiny dogfish, porbeagle, oceanic whitetip, dusky and sandbar sharks). Why? CITES is the only international treaty where if trade protection gets a majority vote for a species – it's enforceable. The most recent vote was close. We have a real chance to sway the next one.

Strengthening the shark finning ban in the European Union (EU). Why Europe? They have some of the largest shark fishing nations and one of the weakest shark finning regulations. We have been involved in several advancements for shark protection here so far. Let's close the loopholes in countries that count.

Setting our sites on new marine protected areas (MPAs). Why? Because they work. There is overwhelming evidence that protected areas help depleted species like sharks recover. Project AWARE has supported many MPAs in the past. But currently, less than 1% of the ocean receives any sort of protection. We want to see that percentage climb.

PADI Diving Society Members, please don't wait. Your support makes a big difference today, for 8 shark species tomorrow.
