We have some great news to share with you! Thanks to tens of thousands of PADI Divers around the globe voicing their support for ocean protection, we secured two big wins last month.
1. The European Parliament voted to completely close the loopholes in the EU shark finning ban. And they voted by a huge majority: 566:47
We did it! In 2006, Project AWARE and partners set out to close the loopholes in the EU shark finning ban and completely ban on the removal of fins at sea without any exceptions. Given the European Union’s influence on international fisheries policies, this is a victory of the highest magnitude for shark conservation in the European Union and across the globe.
2. We’re also celebrating the creation of the world’s largest network of marine reserves in Australia! Over the last few years, Project AWARE called on the diving community to support the campaign. Submissions from divers and ocean advocates made the Australian Government aware of the broad support for ocean protection amongst the global dive community.
The voice of the diving community was instrumental in these two massive milestones for the ocean. Next on the agenda, we're setting our sights on ultimate protections for sharks and rays at CITES, March 2013. Stay tuned to upcoming calls to action from Project AWARE and thank you for your support
