Grand Bahamas, Dec. 2008

by jrosz

Needing to finnish the final dives for my open water certifcation I used the PADI resort finder to locate Sunn Oddysey Divers in Freeport, Bahamas. Choosing a 5 star rated shop and being able to communicate online with Karen made the trip easy to plan. Only visiting friends for a weekend left me with little time spend diving.

Sunn Odyessy is a private dive shop located near the main tourist center of Port Lucaya, they have a multiperson van to pick up any divers and will arrange to find you at your hotel.  Nick and Karen were great to spend time with, Ray another instructor with the shop helped out and together the dive experiance was very enjoyable and organized. The rental gear was well taken care of decent quality. I really enjoyed using the cressi BCD they provided.

With a small group only one other diver and myself were being certified with another diver along for the ride made the skills portion of the dives quick and painless.

Dive #1 a shallow reef about 5 minutes from the dive shop was filled with marine life, multiple tropical fish, eels. With lots of rock formations, corals different bottom types made this dive especially enjoyable for a novice like me. Seeing the different colours and many different types of marine life was a great experiance.

Dive #2 A 60" dive about 15 mintues from the dive shop.  This was my first experiance with surge and medium currents.  I missed the sharks being the third diver down but Alan showed me some picutres he captured on the way down.  Otherwise there was not a lot of animal life around this dive site. Swimming around with Nick I felt a lot more comfortable with my surroundings and started to develop more awareness of the things around me and changes in depth perception. With a few rock formations the navigation was much more difficult to keep my bearings, however i think this is a good place to do a certification dive.

Overall this was a quick trip to Freeport mainly to finnish my certification and enjoy a nice day out in the water. I will definately contact Nick and Karen in the future when I visit the island to show me some more sites and keep developing my diving skills and knowledge.
