Cayman Islands Travel Information

Documents: U.S. citizens must have a return ticket and proof of citizenship, which can be a passport or birth certificate with photo ID. A departure tax of CI$10 is included in the ticket price.Climate: The dry season runs from February to mid-April. Air temperatures range from 70 to 86 degrees F in winter and 85 to 90 degrees F in summer.Airlines: The major U.S. carriers fly from gateway cities in the U.S. directly into Grand Cayman's Owen Roberts International Airport, a modern, efficient facility. Carriers also fly directly into Cayman Brac, bypassing Grand Cayman. Cayman Airways flies from Houston, Orlando, Tampa and Miami. The only air service to Little Cayman is on Island Air from Grand Cayman or Cayman Brac. But be forewarned: Island Air uses small turboprops that can touch down on the grass-and-gravel landing strip. Its baggage allowance is a strict 55 pounds per person. Excess weight will cost you 55 cents per pound (CI$), and your baggage might be put on a different flight. Electricity: Current - 110 volts/60 cycles - and plugs are U.S. standard.Dive Boats: Pre-booked packages are always cheaper. Walk-in rates range from $65 to $75 for a two-tank dive.Photography: The Caymans have first-rate photo services. All three islands rent both still and video cameras and have E-6 processing.Dining: Figure on spending about $30 per couple for a modest meal. For finer dining and nicer ambience and service, expect to pay at least $50 per couple. Wine or cocktails would add quite a bit more to the bill. On Little Cayman, since there is only one restaurant on the island, meals are included in the resort package prices (with the exception of one resort, which is adjacent to the restaurant).Tipping: Restaurants frequently add gratuities to the bill, so be sure to check. On dive boats, it's customary to tip the crew for good service. Figure about 15 percent of the cost of the dive. You can give the tip to the boat captain to split evenly with the crew, or you can tip a specific person. If you're diving with the same crew each day, it's acceptable to tip at the end of your trip.
