A dive resort alternative. Conch Club Condominiums, Little Cayman, BWI When Little Cayman opened to land-based scuba operations in 1961, surface time between dives on Bloody Bay Wall consisted of mosquitoes, rustic accommodations and a complete absence of air conditioning. Today, the island's resorts and services are as modern as any, as are the dive boats. It's actually an astonishing feat given the island's small size (11 miles long by 1 mile wide) and lack of natural resources. But as nice as the resorts are, sometimes the perfect vacation calls for something a little more; more a place to live than to simply sleep - more like home. Consider Conch Club Condos.Built by the owners of the luxurious Little Cayman Beach Resort, the Conch Club features 20 two-story, two- and three-bedroom townhomes lining a 250-foot stretch of private beach. With fully equipped kitchens, living rooms and dining rooms, each has 1,700 to 2,000 square feet of living space. Each unit has unobstructed views of the water from both floors and includes use of two freshwater pools and a large Jacuzzi overlooking the ocean and private dock.Divers are provided private dive services operated by Conch Divers. The regular schedule is two-tank morning and one-tank afternoon trips on Sea-esta, a 42-foot Newton dive boat. The boat departs Conch Club's beachfront dock only when all divers are ready to leave. In addition, itineraries can be customized to guests' requests.Bloody Bay Wall, of course, is the signature dive here. Starting as shallow as 20 feet, the mesmerizing leap plunges literally straight down into the abyss. In addition to this unique geological formation, Little Cayman's Marine Park, on the island's north side, is home to more than 100 species of coral and 500 species of fish.Rental rates (not including room tax and end of stay cleaning service) for a two-bedroom unit vary from $300 to $425 per night depending on the season. This mode of luxury, split four ways, comes to $150 per couple. Not too many exceptional hotels in the Caribbean offer as much.
