Presidente and Scuba Du

by George Jensen

OK, here's the situation. My wife wants to take a cruise; I complain of seasickness and hate being confined. She wants to be pampered with flowery drinks and tuxedoed waiters while sunbathing next to a pool; I want to drink beer in the pool and relax in the shade. She says she wants entertainment and romantic night life; I want loud rock 'n roll and serious partying. Sounds like separate vacations to me, ya think? We do have one common thread that we both enjoy however - scuba diving. So how does one arrive at an equitable solution, you ask? Well, we didn't have to look far. The best of all worlds - above and below water - can be found by simply booking a week's vacation at the five-star Presidente Inter-Continental on Cozumel. Whatever activity or inactivity you have in mind, rest assured you'll probably find it here. The beautiful, award-winning resort is only about 15 minutes from downtown San Miguel, where my wife and I found it convenient to shop in the plaza and attend the libation fest at the famous Carlos and Charlie's. My wife thoroughly enjoyed the resort's attractive decor in contemporary Mexican style; I enjoyed the outdoor fitness center and two lighted tennis courts. However, we did agree on one thing - the 253 fully air-conditioned rooms with remote-control color satellite TV, U.S. direct-dial telephone, service bar and large balcony overlooking the aqua waters were amazing. And the sunsets were to die for! We also enjoyed the concierge service that was helpful in getting us a rental car and helping plan some day-long excursions around the island, including a day trip to Chichin Itza7, the great Mayan temple on the mainland. The Presidente is also the perfect place for families and offers lots of other activities. You'll find exquisitely prepared gourmet food at the hotel's two restaurants, one located right on the beach. Cuisine ranges from typical American fare to traditional Mexican specialties. Lively entertainment is scheduled throughout the day, and nightly shows are a must see. The Scuba Du Dive Center is a world-class centerpiece for all fin-footed visitors to the Hotel Presidente resort. This, by the way, is where I spent much of my time. Scuba Du is located beachside of the shallow lagoon in the center of the property and is a full-service PADI dive center. The dive center offers two two-tank boat trips daily departing from the private pier in front of the resort. The five custom dive boats are all equipped with DAN oxygen units and VHF radios and provide quick access to the reef and back. The part of the dive excursion that I enjoyed most was the professional service offered by the dive masters, who were dedicated to assuring our personal comfort and safety. I especially enjoyed the fact that on all dive trips, only seven people per dive master were on board each boat. Along with rinse tanks and storage lockers, Scuba Du offers new Scubapro rental equipment and all levels of PADI and NAUI certification including nitrox. They also offer night dives every night, computer diving and private charters. A hotel/dive package is also available. So, if you're like my wife and I and can't decide on where to go or what to do but know you want to dive and be pampered, try Scuba Du and Presidente Inter-Continental - they're rated at the top of the best dive resorts in Cozumel.
