Turquoise Bay Dive & Beach Resort: The View
Turquoise Bay Dive & Beach Resort's terrace is a great place to catch a sunset. (turquoisebayresort.com)Turquoise Bay Dive and Beach Resort/Subway Watersports, Milton Bight
Arrive at sunset at Turquoise Bay, on Roatan’s north coast, and the romance is inescapable. Brilliantly colored flowers and trailing palms accent terraced grounds that sweep down from the hillside reception area to one of the best beaches on the island. Huge spreading trees shelter the quaint collection of stucco buildings reminiscent of the historic estates of Jamaica and the Virgin Islands.
Already positioned on the balustrade-lined terrace was a couple enjoying the last rays and the local Imperial beer, delicious with lime and salt. J.W. Watson and Annie Willis had come a long way to be together for this moment — he from Iraq; she from Austin, Texas — and Turquoise Bay was the perfect place to reconnect and get in some awesome diving together. Willis was elated at having just completed her Rescue Diver certification with Subway Watersports, a PADI Five Star Instructor Development Center and National Geographic Dive Center that has one of its locations at Turquoise Bay.
“It was so much fun!” she beamed, to nodding encouragement from Watson, a PADI Divemaster.
At Turquoise Bay and Subway you can make your own schedule and do what you want to do. “It’s very unstructured,” says Subway manager Sharon Bevington. “It’s your boat, your crew.” Its fortunate location on the north-central coast makes Turquoise Bay the only resort for miles around, and Subway’s might be the only dive boats you see, perfect for couples looking for a private escape but equally appealing for a dive club that can easily book the entire 26-room resort.
“You can do it all here,” Bevington says. “Walls, wrecks, caverns — anything.”
