RAJA AMPAT WHAT TO DO
The remote location and the difficulty in getting there has helped keep Raja Ampat relatively natural and pristine. However, as the destination becomes more popular, this is sure to change. For now, accommodations are hard to come by, so it's a good idea to hook up with a travel or tour operator that specializes in the Raja Ampat area. Many operators will give you suggestions as to the best way to get there and where to stay (for the most part, liveaboards) and what to do when you're not diving.
Most visitors to Raja Ampat stay in the West Papua coastal city of Sorong, which has an airport and is the main point of entry for travelers into the area. Sorong is a bustling port city and offers a little bit of big-city life while still being a bit off the beaten path. While the diving is spectacular, more tour operators ate starting to add day excursions to their itineraries. Currently, you can whet your topside appetite for adventure by trying the following activities:
- Waterfall hikes on Batanta
- Visit to ancient burial sites
- Tours of bat caves
- Manta ray spotting
- Red Bird of Paradise treks
- Individualized jungle overnights
- Kayak excursions
- Traditional Papuan fishing techniques
- Bird watching expeditions
