Dream Trip Come True

by Michele Westmorland

Last year I made a dream come true. After many years of research, I launched a two-month journey to retrace the footsteps of Caroline Mytinger, an American artist who traveled to Papua New Guinea and the Solomon Islands to paint portraits of Melanesian people before Western influence changed their traditions forever. Mytinger and her traveling companion, Margaret Warner, were certainly more adventurous than we could ever possibly be: My project partner, Karen Huntt, our film crew and support team traveled on board the comfortable dive vessel, FeBrina, while our courageous predecessors traveled during a time when no such luxuries were available and PNG was fundamentally dangerous to all visitors. From 1926 to 1930, Caroline painted canvasses and drew over 100 charcoal sketches. Karen and I came home with over 10,000 still images and 90 hours of footage to complete a book and documentary film. You can learn more about Caroline's story and our expedition at www.headhuntrevisited.com.
