Primitive rhythms emanate from Papua New Guinea. The seas surrounding this fabled dive destination unfold from the shore like a manic, high-voltage undersea version of Where the Wild Things Are. Even the sand rubble crawls with fascinating creatures. The idea of muck diving first developed here, especially off Milne Bay and Kimbe Bay. Lilliputian realms abound in PNG: You'll find pygmy seahorses, hairy frogfish, all kinds of alien-looking ghost pipefish, the fabled mimic octopus and the wonderpuss. If you carry an underwater camera, PNG has probably held a steady position at the top of your must-do list since you got your first PADI certification. The biggest problem with diving PNG is where to look. On most dives there's literally a whirlwind of activity swirling schools of barracuda and jacks fill the water column overhead, sharks loom at the edge of the blue horizon and piles of critters play hide-and-seek among seafans and soft coral trees that grow to mammoth proportions. Everything seems to come in battalions, and the most common response to a week of diving here is a longing to return. Great guides are essential, and liveaboards are the best platform to experience the wide variety
of offerings.

Catch the Warrior No trip to PNG would be complete without a trip to Mount Hagen in the Highlands to see ancient warriors face off in full (mock) battle regalia at stone-age-style Sing Sings. Afterward, head to PNG Arts in Port Moresby to purchase a one-of-a-kind wooden mask, handmade by local craftsmen. |

In this untamed land you'll hear more than 750 of the world's languages (about one-third of the planet's forms of verbal communication), and PNG abounds with unique cultural and topside attractions. The steep folds of the landscape are swathed in lush rainforests, smoking volcanoes rumble throughout the more than 600 islands, and aficionados of history especially WWII history will find endless distractions both underwater and topside.
