Release a Green Sea Turtle! You too can do it!

Grand Cayman has a whole new activity that you can participate in, for individuals, small groups or families! How about releasing a green sea turtle (Chelonia mydas) from the Cayman Turtle Farm and setting it free in the Caribbean Sea? How cool! You will have a rewarding experience, learn a lot and become a steward of the marine environment, in this case, supporting of the repopulation of green sea turtles into the waters of Grand Cayman.

The people of the Cayman Islands have a long history tied to turtles. In the 1600 and 1700's the Cayman Islands became a provisioning stop for vessels sailing the Caribbean because of an abundance of green sea turtles, which could be caught and kept alive on board as a source of fresh meat. Permanent settlements developed on the Cayman Islands in the seventeenth century and turtling became a means of income as well as providing a local source of food. The Cayman Turtle Farm was established in 1968 as Mariculture Ltd. and was purchased by the Cayman Islands Government in 1983. Cayman banned the capture of turtles from the wild and created a turtle farm to breed and replenish the turtle stocks around our waters. These captive turtles have adapted well in the wild and have been found through out the Western Caribbean from Cuba to as far away as Venezuela and Florida. Many of the captive born and bred turtles released have returned to nest on Grand Cayman. Your Yearling turtle will be tagged with a titanium flipper tag on their fore-flipper which identifies the individual animal and carry the name that you give it upon release.

The release a turtle programme has 2 participation levels to choose from. Your turtle will be a healthy, tagged 1 year old. You can sponsor a turtle from your home or business for $185. and you will be notified of receipt and the date of release for your turtle. What a wonderful statement to say that you care. Staff from Divetech will pick up your turtle up from the Cayman Turtle Farm after it has been tagged and release it for you. You will receive a personalized adoption certificate, photo of your turtle being released, Turtle Print by Rogest and the satisfaction that you have set a turtle free from the farm.

Or you can Sponsor a turtle while visiting and take part in setting it free for $250. and you will receive confirmation on the scheduling of your release. The program is available any afternoon from 1:30 to 4:00pm. You will receive a personalized adoption certificate, photo of your turtle being released, Turtle Print by Rogest, satisfaction that you have set a turtle free from the farm, tour of the Cayman Turtle Farm, selection of your turtle and a great snorkel excursion including a guide and equipment from shore to set your turtle free. Ron Steven aka Rogest, internationally renown marine artist has created the Turtle Print for this release program. "As an artist I love to paint , when I paint I am always learning by what I have done in the past. For me it is the same with the environment and all that inhabit it, we can learn from our past and strive to be better ambassadors of the planet and all of nature's inhabitants in the future. Let's give a little back, back to the ocean, give it a turtle. Join me and support the cause of freedom, compassion, caring and responsibility that we all must share as humans. I have worked with and believe in the PADI Project aware Foundation statement "Conserving underwater environments through education, advocacy and Action" So lets take action and set a turtle free" Rogest.

"At Cayman Turtle Farm, we support and conduct conservation and research programmes through focused in-house initiatives and interaction and integration with local conservation and academic institutions. Through our partnership with Divetech we aim to enhance the number of diminished Caribbean green sea turtle populations. We encouraged everyone to get involved in this Programme and become part of Cayman's future," invited Mrs. Casandra Harris (nee Hibbert), General Manager of Marketing at Boatswain's Beach, the new home of the Cayman Turtle Farm.
