Deep See's Travelok Summit

I'm a bag nut. I spend a lot of time schlepping my gear all over the world and I'm not generally too delicate with any of it. So, I'm a picky bastard when it comes to my main traveling companion. And so far my Deep See Travelok Summit has traveled about 50,000 miles and is still the first bag I grab before a trip. Here's why:

Ty's Travelok Summit

  1. First, I'm not too keen on heavy labor, so I need a set of wheels. For my primary bag if there are no wheels, I won't even consider it. It's as simple as that. The Summit's wheels wide enough to take the corner at Daytona and far enough apart that it doesn't rock when I pull it along uneven pavement.
  2. The Summit's a rock. I've beaten the heck out the thing, and the only part that shows even the notable wear and tear is a loose grommet on the fin pocket. The heavy Denier nylon shell has held up like a medieval bastion (it's a combination of 1680 and 840 Denier nylon with 1200 and 600 Denier polyester ripstop). I'll keep trying to break it and let you know (in a later newsletter) if I have any luck as the miles pile up.
  3. Second to wheels, I look for power zippers. Big, thick, beefy zippers that can take the stress of a continually overstuffed bag (I generally need to sit on my bag to get it zipped). The Summit's got 'em. They're tough. Enough said.
  4. Easy but limited access to the main compartment. The Summit has one main zipper (the beefy one) to allow access to the main compartment, and all other zippers and their compartments are accessed from the inside only. I like this because there's only one way in and out, which keeps meddlesome hands at bay. This is especially helpful when your bags have to travel through San Juan. It also allows me to pack my normally paltry selection of T-shirts, shorts and toiletries separate from the dive gear.
  5. It's big, but not too big. And there are hideaway backpack straps for when I've had to carry it across a sandy beach (another reason I was thankful it was roomy, but not too roomy).
  6. I like that it has no fancy materials. I can rinse it out with a garden hose between trips and dives. It even smells somewhat socially acceptable.

Special note: Once I get to a destination, I carry a mesh bag to tote my gear to the boat and back. Lots of company's make the same style. The one in my bag now is a Deep See with a backpack harness. But after almost eight years of dedicated service, it's about to be replaced, so I'll let you know what I replace it with.
