Blue Summer

During the summer of 2003, Natalie Tuke, Sport Diver's teen editor and author of the monthly column Deep Blue Teen, headed off to the Caribbean on an adventure with Broadreach, a teens-only summer program that took her sailing through the Windward Islands from St. Martin to St. Barts, Saba, Nevis, St. Kitts and St. Eustatius. Along the way she earned her Advanced Open Water certification and by the end of the summer had become a PADI Master Scuba Diver. In addition to diving three to four times a day, the teens learned how to sail and developed leadership and teamwork skills while discovering the natural beauty of the islands both above and below the water.

Photographer and regular Sport Diver contributor Steve Simonsen (alias "Scuba Steve" to the "Broadreachers") joined the teens for one week during the program and captured both the energy and enthusiasm that infused each day's activities and antics, so we have included an expanded gallery of Steve's images to supplement those that appeared in the April 2004 issue of Sport Diver. Check out Natalie's Broadreach adventure through the daily updates in this exclusive Blue Summer online article, and experience the trip of a lifetime through the eyes of a Deep Blue Teen.
