COCO View Resort, Roatan
If you're going to miss the boat, CoCo View Resort in Roatan is the place to do it. And many divers do just that since a magnificent wall waits only a few fin kicks from its shore. The CoCo View Wall is just one of the bonuses that divers will cash in on when they visit this PADI 5-Star Resort. Starting in as little as 15 feet, the wall drops to more than 100 feet with ledges harboring orange cup coral, lettuce corals and a plethora of macro critters and schools of fish, including the prominent creole wrasses, blue tangs and snappers. Other easily accessible dives from shore include the wreck of the Prince Albert and Newman's Wall. The rest of Roatan's world-famous sites, such as Mary's Place and Calvin's Crack, are only a short boat ride away, and day trips to the neighboring island of Utila are also available.
The resort is absolute heaven for dive-aholics - its packages include unlimited shore diving (including night dives) and two boat dives per day. And get this on the way back from the boat dive, they will drop you off on the wall for a second dive. It's kind of a "ski in, ski out" for divers. In between dives, all meals are included, and if the weather is cooperating (it usually is), there's a barbeque and picnic every week on a nearby private cay. Ocean kayaks are also available for exploring the south coastline.
In addition to Utila day trips, the folks at CoCo View can arrange a number of other adventures to round out your stay on Roatan. Take a horseback ride on the beach, tour the island and visit some hidden beaches or take a hike through the Pico Bonito Rainforest where you can frolic in a beautiful waterfall. The town of West End also offers plenty of diversions, and you'll find a few shops and watering holes filled with divers kicking back after their dive days.
It's all good - but you might be able to make it even better if you are one of those lucky people who can get away on short notice. Last-minute dive deals are posted on CoCo View's Web site and offer discounted rates for selected dates. So, if the urge arises, you can take advantage of some significant savings. But regardless of whether you are planning a trip for next week or next year, this is definitely a place you should seriously consider.
