CHUUK -- WHERE IS IT

by Sport Diver Staff

WHERE IS IT
Chuuk is one of four island states located between the Marshall Islands and Guam, just 7 degrees above the Equator. The other island nations in this area, called The Federated States of Micronesia (FSM), are Pohnpei, Kosrae and Yap. The total land area of the FSM is more than 271 square miles and the lagoon is one of the world's largest. Check out visitfsm.org for a map of the Chuuk area.

Chuuk itself consists of 15 large islands and 192 outer islands, and is surrounded by a nearly-circular barrier reef. The area, once known as "Truk Lagoon" is the site of the U.S. attack on the Japanese military in 1944, called "Operation Hailstone." As a result of the attack and subsequent sinking of most of the Japanese fleet, there are now more than 48 diveable vessel wrecks and countless airplane wrecks on the sea floor.

While the FSM is still a fairly remote vacation destination, many Japanese honeymooners vacation there. The majority of other travelers to Chuuk are scuba divers.
