You've heard of split personalities? The Turks and Caicos Islands have three. Most people get to know Provo first: big-name luxury resorts, miles and miles of white sand, golf, restaurants, nightlife and, of course, those lovely coral drop-offs in spectacularly blue water. Then there's Grand Turk, where two cars on the same road means it must be rush hour. If you think Grand Turk is laid-back, though, wait until you dive Salt Cay or South Caicos. It's like stepping out of a time machine set at "way back."

Wall diving is the essence of TCI. The whole island chain sits on a big sea mount that extends up from the extreme depths. The vertical drops seem even more impressive because of the outstanding visibility normally found in these waters. However, the walls which start at around 40 to 50 feet off Provo (off grand Turk, 35 feet) and drop into blue nothingness are only part of the picture. Go shoreward from the lip and you can explore a gradually sloping reef that terminates in the shallows. Grace Bay, off Providenciales, features shallows and sprawling slopes that take days to explore.
