Ultralight Control Systems

Bargibant’s Pygmy Seahorse, Lembeh Strait, Indonesia These seahorses measure less than an inch and are well camouflaged. They have bulbous tubercles on their bodies that match the color and shape of the polyps of its host species, while its body matches the gorgonian stem. Not that long ago, underwater photographers were using Nikonos V and RS cameras, and shooting in film. Today, shooters can choose from an array of digital still and video camera systems. But what is still true today, just as it was 23 years ago when Ultralight Control Systems was founded, is that photographers depend on ULCS’s durable and versatile trays, arms, clamps and adapters for underwater housings, cameras, lights and strobes. Owners Terry Schuller and Dave Reid have built a company that is as exceptional as its products are.

An ingenious, ball-jointed design is at the heart of Ultralight’s industrial strength but extremely lightweight trays and arms. “Our system is designed as a three-clamp system to function as your own arm would,” says Schuller. Ultralight was the first company to include an O-ring in the ball, and it is the only company to specialize in arms, accessories and trays.

Dedicated to making the best gear for their customers, all ULCS products are made in the U.S. with high-grade aircraft aluminum that is hard anodized. “Our products will work on the smallest GoPro or point-and-shoot to the largest dSLR or video housing,” says Schuller. “Our system is so versatile that if you move up to a larger camera you will still be able to use our products.”

Indeed, ULCS set the standard for the rest of the industry. ULCS products and accessories are used all over the world by professionals and amateurs alike.

“I still have 20-year-old Ultralight arms in my travel bag,” says Berkley White, founder of Backscatter Underwater Video and Photo. “Many have copied the design, but I’ve found only Ultralight can withstand years of professional abuse. I appreciate that Ultralight has stuck to its mission of using only top-quality aluminum and anodizing. This means the new parts I’ve added will likely be in my travel bag another 20 years from now.”

ULCS backs up its quality products with a commitment to customer service, the company’s No. 1 priority. “We want our customers to be happy with the products they purchase,” says Schuller. “We are always available by phone and email, returning calls and e-mails within 24 hours. We don’t sell packages. We sell the pieces our customers need.”
