Bonaire Dive Into Summer: Dive With a Naturalist Program A Success

BDA Naturalist German Arrango led the seminar, which focused on the habitat, behaviors and identification clues to 40 of the most common fish species on Bonaire. He was joined by Scuba Diving Executive Editor Keith Phillips--who quizzed participants on the material and awarded prizes to the top scorers--and volunteers from STINAPA and the Bonaire Marine Park.

But the best part of the program, said participants, was the guided shore dive on Bari Reef. According to the Reef Environmental Education Foundation (REEF), the famous dive site has the greatest diversity of fish species of any reef in the Caribbean. Led by Arrango who pointed out different species and behaviors with an underwater slate, participating divers were shown how to put their fish ID skills to use.

"This was one of the best dives I've ever been on," participant Harry Bunch told Arrango when the dive was over. "When you see two frogfish and a seahorse all on the same dive -- it's unbelievable!"

The Dive With a Naturalist program is offered on request by Bonaire Dive Into Adventure. The half-day program includes the fish ID seminar and a one-tank guided shore dive and costs $40. For more information, visit www.bonairediveandadventure.com.

Scuba Diving Magazine Week (July 7-14) is part of the Bonaire Dive Into Summer festival, which runs through September 30. Other events during the week included a Scuba Trivia Contest and prize give-aways at Capt. Don's Habitat and a Grand Finale Cocktail Party at Buddy Dive.
