SeaLife Redefines The Art Of Illumination For Undersea Imagery

SeaLife SL980

SeaLife, the world-leader in underwater photographic equipment, has introduced the SL980 Underwater Photo/Video Light, a powerful 500-lumen LED light source for all of your close-up underwater photography and videography needs, while pulling double-duty as a constant-on dive light. The new SL980 marks the beginning of a revolution in underwater lighting.

Boasting advanced LED light technology in a three-position array of 6,500K-color-balanced 3-watt Cree XP-G R5 LEDs, the SL980 provides the depth and detail for close-up photos and videos that strobe-only pictures tend to lack due to the intensity of the flash. The constant light of the SL980 makes close-up colors come alive with its 70-degree wide-angle beam that evenly illuminates the subject without hot spots or overpowering. The effective range for recording video is 2 to 3 feet, and the range for photography is 1 to 2 feet.

With a simple one-button control for easy operation, the SL980 can be powered on and set to one of eight light modes. As a true 3-in-1 light, the SL980 also can be operated constantly as a dive light, freeing up your other hand while allowing you to operate your camera.

The SL980’s flexible, rubber-wrapped arm permits the light head to be precisely positioned while attached to your underwater camera by way of its universal mounting base. A quick-release allows you to detach the light head from the arm for perfect aiming into dark crevices and under coral to uncover elusive sea creatures. A coiled safety lanyard prevents loss of the head while disconnected from the arm, and a rubber hood protects the unit if you do happen to drop it.

The Underwater Photo/Video Light is powered by four AA batteries located in the light head. The SL980 features a Flash-Cancellation Mode that can be selected to dim the light for two seconds after detecting the external flash, and there’s a Power Overdrive setting that increases the light’s output to 600 lumens for up to two minutes. The SL980’s blinking mode can be used to signal distress.

Depth tested and guaranteed to 300 ft., the SL980 can be used in combination with the SeaLife Digital Pro Flash to create the ideal underwater lighting set-up. The Digital Pro Flash brightens up the colorful background at longer shooting distances, while the SL980 takes care of the close-up shots.

The universal mounting base fits all SeaLife cameras, including the new SeaLife Mini II, as well as many other brands of underwater cameras. The manufacturer’s suggested retail price is $369.95.
