AI may be able to write about why we love scuba diving, but it can never come close to the actual experience

Nothing can replace the thrill of an actual scuba dive

It described the reason for choosing a liveaboard dive trip is the access you get to remote sites. It wrote a paragraph on the additional time you spend diving, and even “captured” in words the community experience of sharing your passion with other divers and becoming lifelong friends!

I decided to test its intellect on writing about a particular dive site. I asked it to write a paragraph on scuba diving Bloody Bay Wall. I did not even mention the location or country. Following is what it gave me:

“Scuba diving the Bloody Wall in Little Cayman is an exhilarating experience that is sure to leave a lasting impression on any diver. The Bloody Wall is a dive site that is known for its dramatic underwater drop-off, which plunges down to depths of more than 1,000 feet. The wall is home to a wide variety of marine life, including schools of colorful fish, rays, and even occasional sightings of sharks. As divers descend along the wall, they are treated to a stunning array of coral formations and a kaleidoscope of colors that create a beautiful underwater landscape. With its clear waters and abundance of marine life, scuba diving the Bloody Wall is a must-do for any diver visiting Little Cayman.”

Though it got the site name slightly wrong, AI could become a tool for researching a particular dive site more quickly than combing through numerous pages of search results. Luckily, though, it will never replace the thrill of an actual scuba dive. We all know that euphoric feeling of slowly descending on a reef, wreck or wall, the feeling of the water on our skin and, of course, the sound of our underwater breathing!

We are in for some extremely transformative times ahead due to technology. I am certain it will improve our lives in many ways. We will have access to more augmented reality scapes from all over the world, including underwater ones. But those of us who scuba dive know that an augmented reality dive could never come close to igniting the number of senses that are amped by just putting on our gear.

AI is the buzzword we will hear nonstop for quite a while…except when we are underwater enjoying reality.
