Guests staying at Sandals Resorts have come to expect suites that offer luxury at every turn, scrumptious cuisine, a host of fabulous pools and a staff that elevates customer service to a whole other level. For scuba divers, though, the vacation is not complete unless the location serves up an extraordinary underwater experience. They can now have both — all the features and amenities of a sumptuous all-inclusive, adults-only Sandals Resorts, plus diverse, exploration-worthy reef and wreck diving. Sandals Royal Curaçao has officially opened, making it the 16th property owned by Sandals and the newest one in the Caribbean. It offers all these features and amenities, and so much more!

The luxurious resort is set on 44 acres of a private preserve known as the Santa Barbara Estate. From here, guests can experience all the natural beauty and colorful culture of Curaçao, including its beaches, limestone caves and the pastel-colored buildings in Willemstad, the island’s capital city and a UNESCO World Heritage site.

Scuba Diving at Sandals Royal Curaçao

The Caribbean Sea is known for its warm, azure waters that divers love, but Curaçao’s fringing coral reefs and wrecks offer a delightful twist that is unique in the Caribbean. The variety of diving off Curaçao often surprises first-time visitors, starting with the reefs that are mere yards from the island’s shores, making many sites accessible by boat and from shore.

At dive spots that are both famous (such as Mushroom Forest) and lesser known (such as the Blue Room), divers will find a kaleidoscope of colors on the reef — healthy populations of corals and sponges, schooling yellow snapper, triggerfish, passing turtles, spotted morays and barracuda. Slow down and you’ll discover the little gems of the ocean — macro critters sheltering in crevices and protected spots, such as frogfish and seahorses.

On the world-famous Superior Producer and Tugboat wrecks, you’ll get a taste of wreck diving in amazingly shallow and clear water, and if you venture on a boat ride to Klein Curaçao, an uninhabited island that is southeast of the main island, you’ll find thick forests of pristine soft and hard corals patrolled by schooling barracuda and snapper.

PADI-certified divers can dive once a day with two tanks or twice a day with one tank, which is included in your Sandals booking.

If you’re not certified, you can try a PADI “Discover Scuba Diving Experience” for an extra fee. This is a 3-hour program that will qualify you for one open water dive (maximum depth is 40 feet) during your stay. No prior experience or certification is required. If you want to get your full Open Water of Advanced Open Water certification, you can purchase a PADI eLearning course for open water or advanced scuba diving and complete the classroom portion at home before your arrival. Then once you arrive, you can complete the in-water portion of your certification (for an additional cost).

The resort offers a special excursion to Klein Curaçao that’s ideal for snorkelers. A super yacht transports guests to the uninhabited island, where you can explore a pink lighthouse and shipwreck site, as well as enjoy light refreshments and delicious appetizers. The highlight of this excursion is the snorkeling. You’ll will find treasures in sunlit shallow waters, including colorful tropical fish that are the butterflies of the reef — angelfish, blue chromis, blennies, damselfish, and, of course, butterflyfish! There’s also plenty of time for relaxing on the beach before sailing back to the resort.
