Thank you to thousands of volunteers who rallied together with Project AWARE during September’s Debris Month of Action! With a united mission to combat the growing marine debris problem, more than 17,000 lbs/7500 kgs of debris was removed and reported from underwater environments around the globe.
Spotting a whale shark is a dream for many divers. Divemaster Daniel Zapata and the Solmar V crew were ecstatic at the recent sighting a 35 foot whale shark. But their happiness soon turned to sadness when they saw a huge line wrapped around the pregnant whale shark cutting into her skin and threatening her life.
September’s Debris Month of Action is in full swing and as always, scuba divers are going above and beyond to help remove trash to keep our ocean environment clean and healthy. Samy Gheraz and the crew at Infinity Ocean Diving in Phuket, Thailand kick started their Dive Against Debris Hero actions, organising monthly Dive Against Debris surveys – the first one of which took place with great success on 9th September.
I am currently in Grand Cayman enjoying an underwater photography workshop with Alex Mustard at Ocean Frontier. When I first arrived on the Island, I did not know anything about photography. Reef Photo & Video load me a Sony NEXUS 5 with a Nauticam housing for my scholarship year but I did not know how to use it. I always thought underwater photography was an important tool for raising awareness and to document to a non-diver about our underwater world but I never invested time to learn how to make a nice picture.

When I received the Our World-Underwater Scholarship Society (OWUSS) Rolex Scholarship I knew only a small portion of what was in store for me. Of course I had read past scholars’ journals and scanned the Scholarship website. Yet what I didn’t know at the time was that this experience would open the doors to a whole new world - changing my life forever for the better.
Every day, scuba divers around the world battle the ocean’s silent killer – marine debris - from beneath the surface. Their mission during this September’s Debris Month of Action? To inspire year-round action to remove, report and prevent underwater debris while combating the growing marine debris problem.
