After successfully raising the Confederate submarine H.L. Hunley from the harbor of Charleston, South Carolina, scientists have begun excavating the inside of the silt-filled Civil War vessel. A preliminary excavation of the sub's stern started in January. The remains of its nine crewmembers are expected to be removed later this year. The excavation and restoration of the sub are expected to take several years. After this work is completed, the Hunley will go on display in the Charleston Musuem. The Hunley became the first submarine to sink an enemy warship when it rammed a black-powder charge at the end of a spar into the Union blockade ship Housatonic on Feb. 17, 1864.
