'Abzu' Video Game Dives Into the Ocean's Beauty
The newly released Playstation 4 and Microsoft Windows video game Abzu has been making waves with critics and gamers alike for its otherworldly beauty. And it's all taken from scenes that divers know well.
Abzu is an open world gaming experience where the player is able to explore the beauty of the deep blue sea.
Developed by Giant Squid Studios, Abzu doesn't have a succinct story. There's no spoken narrative. There's just an underwater oasis that's waiting to be explored, and at the price of just $20.
The game features virtual fish, whales, turtles, eels, manatees and much more. The landscapes are abundant with color in a "cel-shaded" style, which is a shading that an animator applies in an attempt to emulate hand drawn cartoons. Pink coral reefs and shimmering kelp forests are just a couple of the vast and various environments that encompass Abzu.
The serenity of the sea and its vast beauty are important aspects to Abzu for its developers, and they're the most rewarding for the player as well. It is not a diving simulator, but rather a reflective journey. Some video games have a tendency to be rife with difficulty and drudge along for hours of play, but with Abzu, there's no need to stress. Just keep swimming.
