Project AWARE’s Debris Month of Action

What did volunteer divers find during Debris Month of Action? More than 38,680 debris items including 3,935 plastic beverage bottles, 2,152 cigarette filters, and 2,363 cigar tips. Shocking? Wait until we tell you what the most bizarre and unusual discovery was: a “makeshift toilet” found in the murky depths of the Sheffield Canal in the UK.
In Australia, Hannah Pragnell-Raasch, Project AWARE Program and Outreach Coordinator was lucky enough to join Dive 2000 and Mosman Council in their Dive Against Debris in Sydney. “It was a perfect sunny day to get in the water. We collected a weird and wonderful mixture of items from action figures to cutlery to mobile phones and of course the usual culprits – plastic bags and bottles! A huge thanks to Dive 2000 and Mosman Council for letting me join in and help. It was a great day!” said Hannah.
A massive thankyou to everyone that is taking the plunge to Dive Against Debris and contributing to making the ocean planet a cleaner and healthier place.
