Project Aware Cleanup At Kwajalein

I am reporting from here at Kwajalein island in the Marshall Islands group of Micronesia. Not only did we clean the entire island and beaches, but had a contest in which prizes were given to individuals, small groups, and large groups for most trash collected, most flip flops found, and the most unique item. The most unique item was determined by three celebrity judges and turned out to be an old Hawaiian spear found by a group of divers. We had trash collectors ranging in age from 2 to 60 years old. The prizes included: a new bicycle, 50 video rentals, a boom box, and a number of wonderful gift certificates from local food outlets. All prizes were donated by local groups. We also gave out neat little door prizes including: caps, a model airplane (for most enthusiastic trash collector - an energetic school age boy), an umbrella, and mouse pads. The event was headquartered at our scuba club tank house. Two big red & white tents were erected just for Project AWARE. The freerefreshments of grilled hotdogs with all the trimmings were a big hit especially with the high school kids. We had a fleet of trucks that toured the island, picked up the bags of trash and provided nice cold water for all participants. The trucks were decorated with dive flags and specially made signs and could beseen from a long distance. It was a beautiful day here in the islands - perfect for an island-wide cleanup and just in time for an upcoming visit by some special dignitaries. Ivy Springer
