St. Eustatius

For such a small, quiet, charming and unspoiled island, Statia, as St. Eustatius is known, has some of the most interesting andvaried diving in the Caribbean. First, you'll find flying gurnards. While these beautiful fish are difficult to find elsewhere, on Statia they're commonplace. The waters off Statia also harbor a great collection of wrecks from all eras of Caribbean maritime commerce, including the Charlie Brown, a 330-foot cable repair ship that was sunk in 2003 and that has evolved quickly into a vibrant artificial reef, and the Chien Tong, a 170-foot Taiwanese fishing vessel, which was sunk in 2004. For reefs, it'll take several dives to fully appreciate Grand Canyon, a series of volcanic fissures that attract a great variety of marine life. The Cliffs and Hangover Reef will keep you on your toes with everything from Hawksbill turtles to longsnout seahorses.

And among the many unique dives here, you can explore several interesting archeological sites, such as Blue Bead Hole and Triple Wreck where you have a pretty good chance of viewing historical artifacts.
