2011 Reg Tests: Cressi Ellipse MC9 Black Balanced

2011 Reg Tests: Cressi E MC9

Cressi Ellipse MC9 Black Balanced

PRICE RANGE: $350-$500

SPECS
» Ports 2HP, 4LP
» 1st Stage Hyperbalanced diaphragm
» 2nd Stage Pneumatically balanced
» MSRP $470
cressi.com

PERFORMANCE
» Simulator 5 (Excellent)
» Real World 3-4 (Good to Very Good)

FEATURES
The lightest reg in its price category, the MC9 Black Balanced has the only over-balanced (hyperbalanced) first stage in our tests, for improved breathing effort as demand increases. The Cressi was one of only three regulators to score excellent in all simulator tests, and was the top performer in two of the loops. Test divers liked the size and shape of the second stage, though our test reg was fitted with a lightweight exhaust tee, and in unusual swimming positions, water entered the second stage. A larger optional exhaust tee is available, which Cressi says eliminates this problem. In normal swimming positions, the reg breathed easy and stayed dry.

BOTTOM LINE
A good choice for rec divers; divers who do more extreme diving should get the optional tee.
