Are you a nudibranch nerd?

Underwater photographer Christian Skauge will be leading the fifth annual Nudibranch Safari in Norway next year. ScubaPixel and the Gulen Dive Resort invite nudibranch enthusiasts to learn about nudibranch identification, behavior and biology, as well as photographing them underwater, at a workshop in March. The safaris take place March 7-11 and March 11-15.

The workshop costs 4,890 Norwegian Krone (about $820 USD), and covers house reef diving with air, local boat dives, lectures, workshop and four nights in shared twin rooms. Participants are responsible for their own bedsheets and meals.

Oslo, Norway, 30 September 2013: Christian Skauge/ScubaPixel and Gulen Dive Resort invite nudibranch lovers, divers and underwater photographers from all over the world to join the fifth annual Nudibranch Safari in March 2014.

During the Nudibranch Safari, participants will learn more about nudibranch identification, biology, behavior, food habits, reproduction and other aspects related to nudibranchs – including how to photograph them underwater.

The event is led by underwater photographer Christian Skauge and some of the top nudibranch experts in the world: Bernard Picton, author of “A Field Guide to the Nudibranchs of the British Isles” and Dr. Jussi Evertsen and Dr. Torkild Bakken, who runs a nudibranch distribution and diversity project at the University in Trondheim.

Participants can fly in to Bergen from over 50 European cities and transfer to Gulen Dive Resort by speed ferry. Price: NOK 4.890, including accommodation and unlimited house reef/local diving.

Dates: 7-11 and 11-15 March 2014

As an added bonus, world-famous underwater photographer Alex Mustard will also attend the Nudibranch Safari and give a talk about macro and nudibranch photography. The event is highly attractive for both underwater photographers and marine biologists!

Gulen Dive Resort is a PADI resort located close to the mouth of the Sognefjord just north of Bergen on the Norwegian west coast – an area known for its great nudibranch diversity.

So far, a staggering 63 different species have been spotted at Gulen Dive Resort, including several species never before found in Norwegian waters. Join the Nudibranch Safari and experience diving with thousands of nudibranchs!

Nudibranch are soft-bodied, marine gastropod mollusks. They shed their stage after their larval stage.

During the Nudibranch Safari, participants will learn more about nudibranch identification, biology, behavior, food habits, reproduction and other aspects related to nudibranchs – including how to photograph them underwater.

Nudibranch are carnivores that graze on algae, sponges, anemones, barnacles, corals and even other nudibranch. They identify their prey utilizing sensitive tentacles located at the top of their heads.

Nudibranch's scientific name, Nudibranchia, means "naked gills." This refers to the feathery gills and horns that most wear on their backs.
