When and Where to Go Scuba Diving with Mobula Rays

Sea of Cortez: Plan now for summer 2017
In a scene akin to popcorn cooking on the stove or maybe even a Whac-A-Mole game gone haywire, mobula rays cruise through the Sea of Cortez and rise to the surface, leap several feet into the air, and do flips as they travel in a massive pack. The devils flap their fins, seemingly hoping that they can take off and fly. Take the plunge in the Sea of Cortez — the gulf separating Mexico’s Baja Peninsula and its mainland — between March and late November for the best chance to see these rays en masse. But for the most intimate encounter, head to the Cortez Club in La Paz, Mexico, to go out for a night dive. Swarms of rays will come to feast on plankton exposed by lights and put on a show as you soak in the scene.
