ScubaLab First Look: Kraken Smartphone Housing and Next Gen App

We're taking a first look at Kraken's updated universal smartphone housing. This housing is compatible with both Apple and Android devices, allowing users to take their phones under the waves for use as an underwater camera. The housing is made of sturdy anodized aluminum and has depth rated to 280ft. It includes a vacuum sealed with leak detection for added security.

It's powered by a replaceable, rechargeable 18650 lithium ion battery, which can also be used to charge the user's phone while it's installed inside the housing. It includes a snap on red filter, but users can also add wet lenses and other accessories using an optional mounting bracket. The Kraken NextGen app for Apple and Android is the brains behind the housing.

This app's intuitive layout and operation makes it easy for divers of all experience levels. It can capture both raw images and 4K video experience. Photographers will appreciate the app's advanced exposure controls and white balance settings. Outside the housing, the app also has functions for editing video and photos. Divers with compatible devices will be able to utilize its AI powered editing tools to automatically color, correct, enhance, and denoise images.

In our experience, the AI editing tools do a pretty good job of accurately depicting color in images that are properly exposed, whether using artificial or natural light images that are taken in depth or otherwise overly blue tend to be a little monochromatic, with a black and white palette. While the app won't save a bad image. It does a great job of elevating good images with little effort.
