Gear: Must-Have Accessories

You never know when you’ll have an Instagram moment, so take your smartphone diving with the Dry Case. Slide the phone into the clear-plastic waterproof bag, pump out the air to create a vacuum seal, and you’re ready to shoot; or, if equipped with a pair of special earphones, listen to tunes while diving. Access the phone’s touch screen through the pouch, and make calls while the phone is still inside. Each case is depth tested to 100 feet, and comes with a hand pump, armband and lanyard.

For divers looking for serious illumination, the long and sleek ATorch AT 03 and RL03 rechargeable dive lights are excellent choices. Made from aluminum stock, the powerful RL03 uses a non-locking rotary magnetic switch, and offers three light settings plus a strobe mode. The more-powerful AT 03 features a rubberized handhold for easy gripping, and uses a nonlocking metal thumb-slide magnetic switch that operates like your dining room chandelier dimmer, allowing you to power the beam up or down by simply sliding the switch. Both dive lights are depth rated to 328 feet and, depending on the setting, can provide substantial burn times. Both are also powered by a 4.2-volt lithium-ion battery, and include a charger and carry case.

Fans of paintball should get a kick out of the H20 Odyssey's Torid Pulse, a pneumatic pistollike device that shoots air rings more than 30 feet underwater. You can adjust the air rings while shooting, regulating the pulse from fine and fast to thick and slow. It connects to your tank or a pony bottle via a low- pressure hose. It also has more practical uses, like getting your buddy’s attention when diving in limited visibility; or, when you’re on the surface, getting your dive boat’s attention by shooting a blast of water 15 feet into the air.

If you’re about to make the leap into underwater photography, this is the ultimate point-and-shoot package. Super small and simple to operate, the Ikelite Coolpix L28 delivers high-quality, 20-megapixel digital stills as well as 720p HD video. The housing offers drop-in camera loading and access to all camera functions. The housing is depth rated to 200 feet, and is compatible with wide-angle lenses. Add an external strobe or a video light to capture photos at all depths and light levels.

Accessories are the perfect way for divers to get that new-gear fix. Here are a few must-have’s for your gear locker.
